Reflect on your week as a technology user in the classroom OR describe a technology experience you had this week (use the reflection guide--Description, Impact, Intent.)
9/2/2014-9/5/2014
This week in my classroom we began a grammar lesson on sentence structure: Simple, Compound, Complex, Compound Complex which the majority of the majority of students were clueless. How I found out that the students were not at where I felt they needed to be was by giving a Pre-Test which was delivered on Edmodo. After the students finished their assessment I found that there skills were deficient. Instead of plowing ahead and teaching the constructs of proper sentence structure I formed another Pre-Test that gave me data on their knowledge on parts of speech. The data from this also proved that the majority of the students were behind in understanding and analyzing sentences for part of speech. At that point I knew that before we moved on we must start with parts of speech before we can move into lesson concerning sentence structure. After a few lessons on parts of speech using the SmartBoard, PowerPoint, and Quizlet and placing them on Google Classroom the students were ready to move on to sentence structure based on results I received from Quizlet. By the end of the week the majority of students could successfully create each sentence type. The impact and intent of this process was to assess previous knowledge and have data to drive instruction. This week in class we discussed how to avoid being technocentric and by putting content and pedagogy first I was able to nail down the problems my students were facing in class then I devised intervention instruction based on data from the Pre-Test. By doing this I evenly coupled the content, pedagogy, and technology use within the classroom. By the end of the week we has isolated problem areas, used data to drive instruction, coupled PK,CK,TK= TPAK to deliver instruction, and made our way through Bloom's and DOK's which resulted in creation of various sentences that will enable the students to build their writing abilities as we move into our first essay. I plan to continue to use this process throughout the year because not only is it best practices but it also enables me to incorporate technology within my classroom and use to promote a positive learning environment.
